Events open on
Friday evening with a 1 1/2
mile-long parade and
continue at the main festival grounds and Ninth St. "Little Italy"
attractions. Bocce instruction and the state bocce tournament Sat. & Sun. Special
events continue throughout the weekend on the riverfront midway area, Ninth
St., and Sportland Park. Some of the festival highlights include grape
stomping at Quarto Staggiori Fountain, flags of many nations Immigrant
Square Fountain, authentic 40' gondola, contests for costumes, spaghetti
eating and pasta throwing, four museums (coal town, heritage, Italian home,
Italian store), children's carnival rides, games, vendors, craft barn,
Italian food, food, food. Highlights include continual entertainment,
music, and dancing in three locations (2 at midway plus the wine garden,
where children are allowed until 5:30 p.m.); raffle for a trip to Italy;
restored C&EI depot with displays, model trains, grand fireworks finale over the Wabash Riverfront Monday night.
Many additional events and entertainments are often added by separate
organizations nearer time.
